Population Milestone: Monegasques Take the Lead

For the first time in Monaco’s history, Monegasques have claimed a relative majority, comprising 23.9% of the population. This translates to 9,179 residents, overtaking both French nationals (8,473 residents) and Italians (7,515 residents).

“This is a key figure,” says Pascal Ferry, head of statistical studies at IMSEE. “For the first time, Monegasques have a relative majority in the country, ahead of French residents.”

This demographic shift reflects a steady trend: while the proportion of French and Italian residents has declined since 2016, the Monegasque community has grown by a remarkable 9.6% over the same period.

An International Mosaic

Monaco’s reputation as a global melting pot is well-earned, with almost 150 nationalities calling the Principality home. Among the noteworthy changes, the Russian population has seen significant growth, jumping from 749 residents in 2016 to 1,199 in 2023. This marks a growing presence of Russian nationals in the Principality, further diversifying its already eclectic population.

Aging Gracefully: A Shifting Age Profile

The census reveals another key trend: Monaco’s population is aging steadily. The proportion of residents aged over 50 continues to climb, while those under 40 remain stable. This aging demographic reflects a broader global trend but also emphasizes the country’s appeal to older residents seeking a tranquil and luxurious lifestyle.

Housing in the World’s Most Densely Populated Country

With its 38,367 residents spread across just 2.02 square kilometers, Monaco is the world’s most densely populated country. The census reports 21,123 homes, with nearly 46% concentrated in Monte-Carlo and La Rousse—two of Monaco’s most iconic districts.

  • Monte-Carlo: Known for its casinos and luxury, it remains a top choice for housing.
  • La Rousse: A district offering a mix of residential and commercial spaces.
  • Monaco-Ville and Larvotto: The quietest neighborhoods, with 576 homes and 1,263 homes, respectively.

A Legacy of Growth

Monaco’s population has been steadily increasing, adding more than 1,000 new residents since 2016 and nearly 8,500 since 1990. Since 1951, the number of residents has almost doubled.

Looking Ahead: Challenges and Opportunities

The 2023 census highlights the unique challenges Monaco faces as a microstate. Housing demand, an aging population, and the delicate balance of preserving its heritage while embracing diversity will shape the Principality’s future.

Monaco remains a beacon of opportunity, elegance, and cultural richness. With its population milestones and international appeal, this tiny sovereign state continues to punch well above its weight on the global stage.
